What’s in a name?

You might have stumbled upon this site wondering why it was named Day & Night Design Co. I have to admit, it wasn’t my first pick. Or my second. Or my third… I could go on, but I feel like you get it. Have you ever tried to name a business? It’s really freaking hard! Everything is taken! It’s crazy how many times I tried to think of something (and how long it took every time) only to see that someone else was using it. I wanted to go with my own name, but it seems that every other Jessica Carbone out there is also a designer of some kind (let me tell you how original that made me feel) and they have taken every variation of a design company or studio that I could come up with. (Thanks girls. Why didn’t you guys think of me when you were taking our design names?!)

I’ve seen so many names that are just seemingly random words thrown together with ‘design’ added at the end, but when I tried that, I just ended up with the dumbest things. How does it work so well for others?? Haha! I guess I am not as creative a thinker as them. Like, who is going to buy fabric from a designer named “Flowery Painted Stuff Design” or “Coffee Is My Spirit Animal & I Like Flowers too Designs” or “ifle-ray Aper-pay Ompany-Cay”. Haha, ok that last one was too direct. 😆 But, really, I stunk at coming up with something cool.

I wanted the name to not be limiting. I design handbags currently in my Etsy Shop. I am currently writing my first sewing pattern to sell. I also want to design fabric and have my own fabric collections. And I also really want to create products with my own designs on them! You see where I'm going with this. I have a lot of ideas and I’d like for them to all connect in the end-even though I haven’t quite figured out how. So, somehow after literally weeks of trying to put a name together, I ended up on Day & Night Design Co. I had an idea for a fabric collection, I was going to do a ‘daytime"‘ color way and then have a ‘nighttime’ color way, so that kind of kicked it off and the more I thought about it, the more it seemed to work for me. I could do fabric collections like that, I could have day bags and evening bags. I could do kitchen accessories and bedding…and so on! It left me not boxed in to any particular category. And I realized it worked ridiculously well with my Etsy shop name Everyday by Jessica Carbone! So, that settled it! It was a name that fit well with my current shop, did not box me into a specific niche and gave me the go to really begin setting things up, like my website and social media! And that is the story behind the name Day & Night Design Co.

One Last Note…

Now that we were discussing the other Jessica Carbone’s… I got curious and I googled my name and went to images… and boy did I find a lot about us in that search. Here were all the Jessica Carbone’s, similar age to me… we seem to all like designing things. All these girls were so pretty and so professional looking, and then I scrolled down and saw me. It was the very epitome of this Jessica Carbone. A photo that could not capture my essence more… one that I will share here with you if you read all the way down to here. I blurred out the other Jessica’s faces and any info that came up, but there I am in all my caffeinated glory. Nice to meet you…
